From Raising Grapes to Raising Sons

We didn’t just build a winery. Somewhere along the way, we built a life around it.

MCV Wines began with Matt and Teresa Villard, a shared dream, and the slightly crazy idea that they could build something of their own in Paso Robles wine country.

When MCV released its first vintage, the 2011s, in 2013, the vision centered around Petite Sirah—creating bold, age-worthy wines while allowing Matt and Teresa to build a brand that reflected who they were and the kind of wine they wanted to share. Matt may have been the driving force behind the big reds, but Teresa was the persistent voice asking, “What about the whites? What about the pink?” That push helped grow MCV beyond its Petite Sirah roots, adding the fresh, bright side of the portfolio that has become just as much a part of their story.

But as MCV grew, so did their family.

Wine releases happened alongside birthdays. Harvests came between school years. Winery projects, family dinners, tasting-room weekends, soccer schedules, sports team sponsorships, and everything else that comes with raising two boys somehow became pieces of the same story.

There has never been a perfectly clean line between family life and winery life at MCV—and that's exactly the point.

A Family Winery in Every Sense

Being a family-owned winery means everyone has a hand in the story. The people pouring your wine are often the same people who helped make it, label it, pack it, photograph it, plan the event around it, and share it with you. At MCV, the winery has always been personal. The wine you’re tasting, the experience you’re having, and the people welcoming you in are all connected.

Our boys have grown up alongside MCV. The winery has been part of their childhood just as much as they have become part of its story.

In fact, if you know what you're looking for, pieces of our family story are written right onto our labels.

The names of MCV wines have always meant something to us. When you see a wine named with a number—1105, 2011, or 1—there's a story behind it, usually tied to something of special significance to Matt. And then there are the initials: ALV, CLV, JMV, CFV, and JLV. Each one is a dedication to someone in our family.

To someone picking up a bottle for the first time, they may simply look like names. To us, they're little pieces of the people, moments, and memories that have shaped MCV.

And over the years, that has changed the way we think about what a winery can be.

We want MCV to be a place where great wine matters—but where connection matters just as much.

A place where experienced wine drinkers can geek out over an older vintage, someone completely new to wine can ask questions without feeling intimidated, friends can spend an afternoon together, and families don't have to feel like wine country wasn't made for them.

Beyond the Bottle

Today, MCV Wines is still rooted in the wines that started it all, especially Petite Sirah and Petite Sirah-driven blends. But the story has become bigger than what's inside the bottle.

It's the people who return every year.

The friendships made across the tasting bar.

The dinners that turn into traditions.

The collaborations with other small businesses.

The guests who started as customers and somehow became part of the MCV story.

And, of course, the two little boys who have been growing up right alongside the winery.

Because when your business and your family grow together, you realize something:

You're not just building something to sell. You're building something you hope will mean something.
